Our 'Roots and Shoots' Project
The children, parents and staff at St.Anne’s Catholic Primary have now been actively taking part in the Roots and Shoots project since Autumn Term 2011.
During this time we have worked closely with Calvin from Faiths 4 Change and partners to bring about many changes to our own school grounds and the immediate locality. As a result of the work completed we have experienced a range of benefits and learning opportunities which have had an extremely positive impact on both the school and local community.
The project has included educational experiences for children, parents, staff and local residents.
· Planting a native hedge species within the front perimeter of the school.
· Planting several varieties of soft fruit bushes within our allotment area at the rear of the school to create a new orchard area.
· Recording evidence of wildlife observed in and around the school grounds
· Planting ‘Edible Diamond Jubilee’ themed hanging baskets for the benefit of families and local residents of Overbury Street.
The workshops have been attended by children of all ages, parents, carers, staff and local residents.
The sessions have given children and their friends and families time to enjoy a shared experience, to learn alongside each other and for some, to plant for the very first time!
The impact of the workshops have been very positive. Children report their enjoyment, excitement and learning resulting from taking part. Adults reported how their confidence had improved through sharing a fun, informal activity in a social setting with other adults and children.
