Read For My School

Read for My School is a national schools reading competition that promotes reading for pleasure by challenging pupils to read as many books as possible in three months. Throughout the competition there are prizes and awards to be won for schools and pupils taking part.

  • Read for My School runs from 18 January to 15 April 2016.
  • The competition is open to all children in primary school Years 3 to 6 and secondary school Years 7 and 8 throughout England.

Pupils are encouraged to read as many and as wide a range of books as they can in the three months of the competition. This website includes a library of over 100 online books to choose from and all participants can access these freely throughout the competition. Books to suit the full range of reading abilities are available, including material for pupils with SEN. The books are organised in eight genre-categories and pupils are encouraged to aim to read books from a range of categories. Pupils may also choose to read any book of their choice offline and then log what they have read via their Read for My School account. Other key features of the programme include:

  • Read for My School is fully compatible with most major tablets and can be accessed via Kindle and iPad so that children can access books in whatever way they find most enjoyable.

Teachers can nominate pupils to win reading  awards.  Here are the four awards categories:

  • Reading Pioneer! Encourages others to read by talking about books, or does a piece of work on a favourite book to be displayed at school.
  • Reading Voyager! Shows that they have learned to love reading for pleasure.
  • Reading Conqueror! Shows that they have read more than normal during Read for My School.
  • Reading Explorer! Uses Read for My School as a chance to read new types of books by new authors.
