YEAR 6 – SUMMER TERM 1 LEARNING JOURNEY

Hello to all year 6 parents & carers! As we are now entering a new half term, I want to let you know all about the topics we will be covering and what to expect to hear about from your child.
RE – Witnesses, Judaism, Healing and the Common Good
In the Witnesses topic we will learn how the Holy Spirit enables people to become witnesses. We will learn all about the religion of Judaism and how they worship God. During Healing we will learn about the Sacrament of the Sick and in the Common Good topic we will learn about the work of the worldwide Christian family.
ENGLISH
During the first half term, we will be preparing for our SATs by revising our reading and writing skills with a focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar. After half term we will be studying short stories and flashbacks along with journalistic writing.
MATHS
This half term we are preparing for our SATs tests by really boosting our
knowledge and revising. Next half term we will be using and applying our maths skills
with various maths problems involving managing a fairground!
SCIENCE
Our area of research for the first half term is Interdependence and Adaptation
and will see us investigating habitats in our school grounds and learning how
different creatures have adapted to their environment. During the second half
term we will study Sex and Relationships Education (more information will follow
and parents and carers will be invited to a meeting before we embark on this topic).
Art
This half term we will be creating artwork linked to our area of research – can we
camouflage a creature in our paintings? In the second half term we will be
celebrating our biannual arts weeks where our work will be involved in an exhibition
alongside other schools in the Toxteth Network. Our art work will be based on the
work of Antoni Gaudi (the children visiting Barcelona will be able to tell us lots
about him upon their return),
ICT
We will create iMovies about the habitats in our school grounds during the first
half term. This will involve taking photographs and recording videos before putting
them in a multimedia presentation, (this is an app worth purchasing if you have any
Apple products).
GEOGRAPHY
In the second half term our Area of Research will focus on the country of Spain. We will learn all about the Spanish lifestyle as well as how the landscape has been affected by tourism. We will also learn about the country’s food and commodities.
PE
We will develop our fielding skills in a variety of games involving rounders and cricket this half term. In the second half term we will be developing our dance skills in preparation for a wonderful Leaver’s Performance!
PSHE
Our PSHE work will focus on transition in preparation for the move to Yr 7. The children will share their feelings about moving to their secondary schools.
SPANISH
The children (and myself!) are learning how to extend their vocabulary and not only how to talk in Spanish but also to write in Spanish!
