Year 5 – Summer term
Learning Journey 2013
Hello to all year 5 parents and carers! As we are entering a new term, I would like to let you know all about the topics we will be covering and what to expect to hear about from your child.
RE
The first topic we will be looking at is ‘Serving’. The children will learn that the Spirit of God is active in each person and in a special way in the community of believers, which is the church.
In the next topic, ‘Reconciliation’, the children will be learning that God has given to each person the free will and power to choose.
Looking at the ‘Universal Church’, we will be exploring how every human being is created in the image of God and has the special gift and challenge of sharing in God’s creation. There will also be a focus week on Judaism.
English
‘Significant Authors’ will be our focus in literacy, starting with Michael Morpurgo, who wrote War Horse. Later on we will be looking at JRR Tolkien, author of The Hobbit. We have got some exciting new resources to use in our English lessons this half term. Later on in the term we will be looking at ‘Myths and Legends’ which the children will really enjoy.
Can I just remind you that the children need to be reading the books in their book bags every day please. It makes a big difference to their progress in class.
Maths
This term we will be using our maths skills to solve one and two-step word problems, starting with our creative maths day this week – watch out for the photos on our website! Also, the children will be continuing with their weekly multiplication and division challenge. Please encourage them to keep learning their tables at home – they are doing really well!
Area of Research
We will be studying geography, art and music through our area of research topic, ‘Rivers’ and our science topic will be ‘Life Cycles’. After half term, through our area of research, we will study ‘Renaissance Art’, tourism in geography and ‘Food’ in DT. We will also have a focus on ‘Changes’ in our PSHE topic.
ICT
We will be using our new computer suite to research throughout the term, but we will also be creating amazing characters using the ‘Crazy Talk’ programme. Also, look out for the blogs on our website, we will be starting them soon…
PE
Swimming will continue on a Tuesday. I’ll take this opportunity to remind you that the children need their swimming kits and swimming caps every week. A doctor’s note is required if a child needs to miss swimming.
Little league will continue to come on a Friday to do PE with the children.
Spanish
The children are becoming really good linguists. By the end of this term, they will be able to describe what they and others are wearing. Through songs and games their pronunciation of Spanish words will continue to improve.
If there is anything that you would like to discuss further, please make an appointment through the school office.
Thank you,
Mrs McCormick, Mrs Hambleton and Mrs Eke.
