Relationship & Sex Education

At St Anne’s Catholic Primary, we use a programme called A Journey in Love to deliver our Relationships, Sex Education (RSE). Developed by Sister Jude Groden of BRES, this resource is recommended for Catholic schools and is designed to support children’s development throughout their time in school. It links closely with our Religious Education, PSHE, and Science teaching.

As children grow and move through school, they naturally begin to learn more about themselves and their place in the wider world. At St Anne’s, we nurture this curiosity within a safe and stimulating environment that supports all aspects of their development. Guided by our mission and Gospel values of truth and respect, we aim to help children understand their unique and special place as children of God.

Our faith is at the heart of school life, and part of this is helping children to understand themselves, their relationships, and their role in the community. A Journey in Love plays a key role in this, helping children grow spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically. The programme runs through every year group and covers key themes such as friendship, family, community, relationships, and spirituality—supporting our children as they grow in faith and understanding.

The content is always suited to the children’s age and level of maturity, recognising that not every aspect of personal development can or should be covered by the end of Year 6. Lessons are taught with care and sensitivity.

Children often have questions as they learn, and we welcome this natural curiosity. Our lessons include time for discussion, and we approach all conversations with understanding and care. A Journey in Love also highlights the importance of parental involvement, encouraging children to talk about what they have learnt at home.

As a parent, you have the right to withdraw your child from Sex Education at any time if you wish to do so however, this is not to be confused with the topics around growing and life cycles within the Science curriculum which is a statutory requirement.
